Artist Note #24 – Alternative Photographic Processes
July 18, 2023
It’s Summer Time
Summer is halfway done. I’ve come back from France/Germany (more on the trip later). A’s come back from Cyprus/Jordan, and the kids are mostly done with summer school classes/camps.
I took a six-month hiatus on the blog since school, the hospital, and life was busy. Extremely is putting it nicely. My desktop is filled with folders, Word docs, PPT slides, Excel spreadsheets, and images everywhere. It’s quite unbearable to look at. It keeps calling out – organize me.
Well in a sad attempt to do so amid a summer job (which my contract just ended) and a summer fellowship, I am marking down the research I am currently working on – alternative photographic techniques.
I had been interested in the mordencage process for quite some time. I must have stumbled upon it while researching different techniques. However, the process is quite toxic and dangerous. One needs PPE equipment and several pieces of dedicated equipment to do the work. You don’t want to mix this stuff with regular darkroom equipment because it’s corrosive.
Researching and acquiring the materials is such a hurdle. Unfortunately, I’m still at the research stage with the cost of supplies, DIY making my drying racks, and finding big enough darkroom trays. Plus, finding space at school? I’m not sure where to do this since no one should be in the darkroom when I am working with the materials.
