Germinating a Seed
Last year, I pitched a grant idea to a Chicago library to make prints using historical images and images from the local community. I never heard back from the grant, but I did pitch it to another – Oak Park Public Library (OPPL). I had frequented it as a patron for many years. I applied last year and never thought about it. After all, I had been used to rejections.
I received an unexpected email from the Exhibitions Manager in late December/early January stating that my application had been accepted. An artist friend encouraged me to do it, even though I had reservations about being able to pull off a community exhibition. Who did I know? How was I going to get community buy-in?
I met with several library staff, and for several meetings, we decided to continue with the exhibition.
Four Workshops and a Collage Session
In the last year, I met three artists in the community in some unexpected ways. One artist I met through a mutual colleague who thought two people who live in the same area should get to know one another. I met a second artist by attending a free artist workshop, and the third I met when we waited in line together to vote early. Each of these meetings felt providential.
When I reached out to each of them, they were open and willing to collaborate on this germinating seed of an idea, which was starting to sprout out of the ground.
Over two months, we met with the community to make DIY prints via carbon copy paper. Each session was different. No one attended the first workshop except the four of us, a teen, and the OPPL marketing specialist who helped get the word out. The second session received a little more attention thanks to friends, and then the third and fourth sessions involved a new way of making work where community members use their images to make prints.
Curatorial Debut
Now I can say that it has been a labor of love to see this exhibition come to fruition. Thanks to Bethany Cordero, Jill Obermaier, and Cindy Trim, and the OPPL Exhibitions Team, Encoded Memories is now on view.
