Related to Hanmono, Remnant takes leftover scraps from completed pieces, such as the kimono/haori and Korean quilts, and weaves them together into one. The viewer can see a mosaic of garment fragments – from a child’s hat, vest, and pants to a woman’s skirt, undergarments, and the sleeve of a dress top. These remnants speak metaphorically to the destruction and eradication of Korean cultures by the Japanese imperialist regime, a form of erasure of the artist’s ancestral history and identity. The piece will be an ongoing project that will morph and grow over time.
