I confess. I have not watched Minari…yet, but I did catch the moment Youn Yuh-Jung gave her acceptance speech at the Oscars for winning Best Supporting Actress. She thanked Kim Ki-Young for giving her first role. Below is a short clip about her background:

The pandemic has led me to pick up some of the strangest books. I was researching about Korean patchwork quilting and this one popped up:
Korean Horror Cinema (affiliate link) led me to read about Kim Ki-Young, a director who died in a house fire in 1998. From what I’ve read thus far, he’s an important figure in Korean cinema. It took me a second to connect the dots.

I looked for Woman of Fire (1971) directed by Kim Ki-young but fell short. I managed to find an article that pulled film stills:
